Is IPTV legal in the UK? What the law says

Updated 2 min read

IPTV as a technology is legal in the UK, and several major TV providers deliver their channels that way. What's illegal is selling or using a service that streams channels without the rights. Sellers have been jailed, and viewers of shut-down services have received warning letters citing the Fraud Act.

Small brass balance scale and a TV remote on a dark wooden desk

It’s one of the most common questions people in the UK ask before buying an IPTV subscription, and they’re right to ask. The answer depends on what you’re watching through IPTV, not on the technology itself.

IPTV simply means TV delivered over your broadband rather than through a satellite dish or an aerial. Several of the UK’s biggest TV providers now offer packages streamed over the internet, entirely legally. Devices such as a Firestick and apps such as TiviMate are legal as well.

Unlicensed services are not

Broadcasters sell the rights to their channels. A service that streams those channels without a licence infringes copyright, and selling access to it can amount to fraud.

UK courts have taken this seriously for years. Sellers of illegal streaming boxes and subscriptions have been convicted of fraud and conspiracy to defraud, with prison sentences running to several years. The Digital Economy Act 2017 also raised the maximum sentence for online copyright infringement to ten years.

What about viewers?

For a long time, enforcement focused almost entirely on sellers. That has shifted. When police and the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) take down an illegal service, they can seize its customer list. FACT has since sent warning letters and emails to more than a thousand subscribers of shut-down services, reminding them that dishonestly obtaining paid TV services can be an offence under section 11 of the Fraud Act 2006.

A warning letter isn’t a prosecution, and individual viewers have rarely been charged. But the direction is clear, and there are practical risks too:

  • Malware in modified apps and “fully loaded” boxes.
  • Payment fraud on sites that disappear as quickly as they appear.
  • Services shutting down mid-subscription, with no refund.

How to check a provider

  1. Ask about licensing. A legal provider can explain where its rights come from. That applies to us too: ask us on WhatsApp before you order.
  2. Look for a real business: terms, a refund policy, a named company and a way to reach a person.
  3. Be wary of prices that look impossible for the channels being promised.
  4. Don’t prepay years up front with a provider you don’t know.

Quick answers

Can you get fined for watching illegal IPTV in the UK?
Viewers have received warning letters from FACT, the anti-piracy organisation, citing the offence of obtaining services dishonestly under the Fraud Act 2006. Prosecutions of individual viewers have been rare, but the risk isn’t zero, and it has grown as customer lists are seized.
Is a Firestick illegal in the UK?
No. A Firestick is a legal streaming device. Only unlicensed services or apps used on it are a problem.
What are legal IPTV providers in the UK?
Any provider that holds the rights to the channels it shows. Mainstream pay-TV and broadband companies that stream over the internet are legal examples. For any other provider, ask where its rights come from.
